“Rowing in Eden” song cycle based on Emily Dickinson
When Olga Gurevich, a wonderful musician, approached me not long ago with a question: do I have compositions for flute, mezzo-soprano and piano, though at that time I did not have any – it was a great joy for me just to hear from her! And then, when I learned that Olga’s collaborators will be two other amazing musicians: Anna Tona and Laura Falzon, whom I also know well, and collaborated with, – what a trio is interested in performing my music – I was just thrilled!
From what I sent for their perusal; the choice fell on a song cycle “I Wear My Wings”, based on Emily Dickinson. Originally, it was written for mezzo and piano. So, “Rowing in Eden”, the mini cycle of 3 songs, in a version for flute, mezzo-soprano and piano, as requested. These songs are about loneliness and pain, happiness and ecstasy; as well as love and death.
Let’s delve into the words spoken by Emily Dickinson: “I ask for one thing only: let me share with you my delight and the sacred mystery of my life.” – and let’s try to decode this meaningful message together!
