Three songs tell of the feeling of the heaviness of life and tell of loneliness, sadness, longing for love and understanding, and belief in the inevitability of bright days and joyful days.
Originally, “I Wear My Wings”, a vocal cycle based on Emily Dickinson was written for mezzo and piano. However, following the Zephyra’s trio request I made a shorter version named “Rowing in Eden” for this chamber ensemble. Now this is the mini cycle of 3 songs, for flute, mezzo-soprano and piano.
This cycle is about the hope for the best (“A Great Hope Fell”); about the passionate desire to be with your loved one despite any obstacles (“Wild Nights – Wild Nights!”) and about that tiny hope that always exists when you know that your Day will certainly come tomorrow (“Will There Really Be a Morning?”). As we know, Dickinson is one of the most celebrated poets of all time, and her poetry continues to inspire and captivate many composers, I am definitely one of them.
